This website is dedicated to the European Sustainability Science Laboratory (ESSLab+), a research community being established within the European University of technology (EUt+). The ESSLab+ is be a multinational, multi-campus, trans- and interdisciplinary research group. Its aim is to contribute to the research effort in sustainability sciences.
Today ESSLab+ is a research group and has the ambition to become an established research institute within EUt+ in the next two years.
Firmly rooted in the mission and vision of EUt+, ESSLab+ is particularly aware that answers to these challenges necessarily involve technology, but that they need to be multi-faceted and address the complexity of socio-technical issues. Furthermore, ESSLab+ aims to develop a critical perspective on technology to enable paradigm shifts.
The scope of the research: understanding the complex dynamics that arise from interactions between human and environmental systems (Clark, 2007).
The main research question addressed: at multiple scales and over succeeding generations, how can the Earth, its ecosystems, and its people interact toward the mutual benefit and sustenance of all? (Weinstein et al., 2013)
The goal is not to ecodesign technologies or to provide more efficient technical systems, but to produce theories and knowledge about the interaction between human systems, technical systems and environmental systems, with a multi-level and long-time perspective.
Find more information about the scope of the lab here.
The ESLab+ community can help you:
Strengthen your knowledge of sustainability science (through exchanges but also thematic seminars, and conferences)
Have international experience and interdisciplinary projects (for young and senior researchers)
Build an international network focused on the role of technical systems on sustainability issues
The membership process has 2 steps:
Step 1: fill in a “Membership application” document and send it to [email protected]. The application document will be available on agora.univ-tech.eu, in the folder part of the sphere called “Sustainability Science Lab”.
Step 2: fill in this survey.
PhD students, lecturers, assistant professors, associate professors, professors: everyone is welcome!
All the events organised by this research group will be announced on agora.univ-tech.eu. So please, join the sphere to make sure you have all the information and documents.
